These are some common thoughts of patients stuck with persistent pain:
“Perhaps there will be a breakthrough and my pain will be curable”
“If doctors can diagnose the cause of my pain, they will be able to treat it”
“I spend most of my life taking care of my pain”
There have been amazing advances in medical science but there is still no ‘cure’ for all pain and it is also mystifying for many patients that there is no plausible explanation for symptoms that create such immense discomfort and lost quality of life. Many patients are also led to believe that their pain is 'all in the mind', and begin to feel unheard, confused, helpless, and even ashamed about their experience. Often the best outcomes happen when patients are able to feel heard and validated and learn about their very real pain and how it can be minimised. Currently, the literature favours a multidisciplinary approach to managing persistent pain, and psychology has a very strong evidence base for keeping pain to a minimum and improving quality of life.
